Born in Morocco and brought up in Belgium, Mous Lamrabat’s imagemaking is a product of his diasporic perspective, exploring themes such as belonging and identity through a beautiful and humorous lens.

In an interview for CR’s Photography Annual in 2019, the photographer said: “My background is basically being a Moroccan kid that tried to survive in the West. Inside our house you got transported to North Africa and forgot you were in Europe. And outside the house we wanted to join the cool kids with the coolest sneakers.”

With more than two billion users in over 180 countries, Whatsapp is a brand with strong links to global diasporic communities. Fresh from revealing its new branding and universal design system earlier this year, the private messaging app has collaborated Lamrabat on a photography project that shines a light on its diasporic user base.

A celebration of cross-cultural identities, There’s No One Like Us will go on display in a three-day exhibition at the Tab Centre, a historic community centre in Shoreditch, London, which has served children, families, vulnerable adults and asylum seekers for over 190 years.

Captured in Lamrabat’s signature style, the project features intimate portraits and interviews with people around the world. The subjects and their stories cross over 25 cultures in countries such as Brazil, Mexico, India, and Morocco, illustrating the nuances of cultural duality today.

“My friends and family are spread out all over the world, being raised in different parts of the world, having different cultures and traditions,” says the photographer. “As an artist, I try and catch these unique differences and put them into context, and by doing so, I feel like I am bringing all these people back home – no matter where they are. We wanted to create images to show how small the world is within this WhatsApp world.”
